I enjoy, being geographically the heart of India the largest state of India covering an area of 4,43,406 sq km. and being the source of most important rivers of India- the Narmada, the Mahanadi , and the Wainganga. There are other rivers too, popular, romantic and life sustaining. Tapti, Chambal, and their tributaries- Ken, Betwa, Kwari, Son and Kali Sindh. And accounting one third of the total forest cover, forty percent of India’s tribal population dwells on my soil. My boundaries are such that they cover many states and therefore a little bit of their culture and tradition is reflected in culture of my inhabitants.

India’s remaining genuine forest and some of its least densely populated countryside are over my soil. This is my land where one encounters the pre historic cave paintings and where one can enjoy some of the most exquisite sculptures and architecture. Memories of historic cities in my region linger on and the association of diverse faiths with me is indubitable. And this was my land where the majestic tigers once roamed unchallenged-undisputed Kipling country. Sanchi and Vidisha, Khajuraho and Orchha, Gwalior and Indore, Bhopal and Ujjain, Jabalpur and Chanderi-all names which conjure up visions of a resplendent past and fascinating present

The lush green mountain ranges Vindhyan, Satpura, Kaimur and the rivers Narmada, Mahanadi, Tapti, and the Chambal are my jewels that I am proud of. The Vindhya ranges runs diagonally across the state from around Dhar to Khajuraho. The Kaimur range runs through Baghelkhand, over looking the Gangetic plain around Varanasi and Allahabad in U.P. Both are frequently broken by rivers and deep ravines, often covered in forest, and rise in 600m.

The Narbada rises in the heart of the state and along with the Tapti river its south it flows west to the Arabian sea.. Narmada cuts across the land rising in the hills near Amarkantak beginning torrentially, occasionally frothing not in rage but in sheer exuberance- then flowing gently for the rest of its course. At Jabalpur it runs through some impressive marble gorges along its north are the Bhanrer hills, outsiders of Vindhya range.
