M
owgli’s Birth at Kanha

Father Wolf found me in natural splendor of Kanha’s dense sal and bamboo forest under the rolling grasslands. He was surprised and uttered to his wife (the mother Wolf) "A man’s cub Look!"
Mother Wolf said, "How Little! How naked, and-how bold! I have never seen one. Bring it here."
And I was pushing my way between the cubs to get close to the warm hide of Mother Wolf’s lap.
When the moon light was blocked out of the mouth of the cave, and the Tiger-Shere Khan was there saying…"My quarry. A man’s cub went this way,". Its parents have run off. Give it to me." Shere Khan had jumped at a woodcutter’s campfire, and was furious from the pain of his burned feet.

"The Wolves are free people," said Father Wolf. "They take orders from the Head of the Pack (Wolves society), and not from any striped killer. The man’s cub is our-to kill if we choose."
Ye choose and ye do not choose! What talk is this of choosing? By the bull that I killed, am I to stand nosing into your dog’s den for my fair dues? It is I Shere Khan, who speaks!" The tiger’s roar filled the cave with thunder.
Mother Wolf shook herself clear of the cubs and sprang forward, her eyes, like two green moons in the darkness, facing the blazing eyes of shere Khan and uttered . The man’s cub is mine. Father Wolf looked on amazed. He had almost forgotten the days when he won Mother Wolf in fair fight from five other wolves. Shere Khan might have faced Father Wolf, but he could not stand up against Mother Wolf, for he knew that where he was she had all advantage of the ground , and would fight to the death. So he backed out of the cave, and when he was clear he shouted: "Each dog barks in his own yard! We see what the pack will say to this fostering of man-cubs. The cub is mine, and to my teeth he will come in the end , O bush tailed thieves!"
And then according to the law of Jungle on suggestions of the Baloo-the sleepy brown beer and Bagheera-the Black panther , the Pack of Council allowed the Mother Wolf to keep me with them. And she said "Surely I will keep him. Lie still, little frog. O thou Mowgli-for Mowgli the Frog I will call thee-the time will come when thou will hunt Shere Khan as he has hunted thee."

I grew up with the cubs and Father Wolf taught me his business, and the meaning of things in the jungle, till every rustle in the grass, every breath of the warm night air, every note of the owls above his head, every scratch of a bat’s claws as it roosted for a while in a tree, and every splash of every little fish jumping in a pool meant just as much to him as the work of his office means to a business man.
Bhagira-the Black panther, inky black all over, had taken care of me right from my infancy. Every body knew Bagheera, and nobody cared to cross his path; for he was as cunning as Tabaqui-the Jackal, as bold as the wild buffalo, and as reckless as wounded elephant. But he had a voice as soft as wild honey dripping from a tree, and skin softer than down .
Old Baloo-the Beer, taught me the law of Jungles along with the other wolf cubs. How to tell a rotten branch from a sound one ; hoe to speak politely to the wild bees ;what to say to mang – the bat when he disturbed him in the branches at midday ; and to warn the water snakes in the pools before splashed down among them . he Baloo also taught me the master words of the jungle that shall protect me with the birds and snake people, and all that hunt on four feet accept my on pat.

Escape from The Bandor-Log (The Monkeys)

Once, while I was left between the Panther and the Beer, the Bandar-log(monkeys) carried me in their arms up to the top of trees and said I was their blood brothers and should be their leader some day. Monkey people are considered to be forbidden in the people and while I was enjoying the wild rush and the terrible check and jerk when they carried me up the trees chills – the kite saw me, I asked her to mark my trail and tell abouth the same to Baloo and Bagheera.

In the mean time, Baloo and Bagheera became furious with rage and grief. Baloo Said to Bagheera that they the Bandar – log fear Kaa- the rock Python and they went off to look for Kaa. They found him stretched out on warm ledged in the afternoon sun, admiring his beautiful new court, and twisting the thirty feet of his body into fantastic knots and carves. They told every thing to Kaa.

Now they all were following Bandar –log. Cheil- the Kite, found them on the way and said "I have seen Mowgli among the Bandar-log . He bade me tell you. I watched the Bandar-log have taken him beyond the river to monkey city-to the Cold Lairs. I have told the bats to watch through the dark time. That is my message. Good hunting, all you below!"

" It is a nights journey- at full speed" said Bagheera, and Baloo look too very serious. "I will go as fast as I can". He said anxiously. While Bahgeera hurried forward, at the quick Panther-canter. Kaa the huge rock Python held level with him.

The monkey people have brought me to the lost city, I had never seen an Indian city before, and though this was almost a heap of ruins it seemed very wonderful and splendid. Some king had built it long ago on a little hill. The monkeys called the place their city, and pretended to despise the jungle people because they lived in the forest. They would sit in circles on the hall of the king’s council chambers, and scratch for freeze and pretend to be man. One of the monkey made speech and told his companions the Mowgli’s captured Marked a new thing in the history of Bandar-log, for Mowgli was going to show them how to weave sticks and cans together as protections against the rain and cold.

Then their was cloud coming to cover that moon and I thought if it were only a big enough cloud I might tried to run away in the darkness. That same cloud was been watched by Bagheera and Kaa. Knowing well how dangerous the monkey people were in large numbers, did not wish to run any risks. " I will go to the west wall," Kaa whispered, when that cloud covers the moon I shall go to the terrace said Bagheera. The cloud hide the moon, and has I wondered what would come next I heard Bagheera’s light feet on the terrace.

The black Panther had race up the slope almost with out a sound and was striking. And they were the big fight I stood as quietly as I could, earring through the open work and listening to the furious din of the fight round the black Panther. Than from the ruined wall nears the jungle rouse up the rambling war shout of Baloo. All that while the fight with Baloo went on, and the monkeys yelled around Bagheera, and Mang the bat, flying to and fro, carried the news of the great battle over the jungle, till even Hathi- the wild elephant trumpeted, and faraway, scattered bands of monkey folk woke and come lapping along the trees- roads to help their comrades in the lost city, and the noise of the fight roused all the day birds for miles around. Kaa was every thing that the monkeys feared in the jungle for none of them knew the limits of his power. And so they ran, stammering with terror, to the walls and the roofs of the houses.

"Get the man-cub out that trap; I can do no more," Bagheera gasped. "let us take the man-cub and go. They may attack again." I flung my self between Baloo and Bagheeera- and arm around each big neck and this is how because of Kaa, Bagheera and Baloo I got an escape from the Bander-Log.
